Port of Wilmington Welcomes the M/V Saga Viking

The Port of Wilmington, Delaware celebrated the maiden voyage of the Saga Forest Carriers International. A.S.’s newest vessel, the M/V Saga Viking to Wilmington on April 19. The M/V Saga Viking was delivered for her maiden voyage on February 28th. She sailed from the Oshima Shipbuilding CO. Ltd. shipyard in Japan to the Ports of Cowichan Bay, Canada, Long Beach, CA, and through the Panama Canal to Wilmington, Delaware.

On her arrival in Wilmington, the vessel was welcomed by the Port of Wilmington Director of Operations, Fred Fitzgerald, and Manager of Quality Assurance, Marty McLaughlin, as well as by the representative of T. Parker Host of Delaware’s, Vice President, James L. Taylor, Jr.. During the welcoming ceremony, Fitzgerald presented plaques to the Master of the M/V Saga Viking, Captain Joao S. Barreto, and to Taylor in recognition of her maiden voyage and visit to the Port. 

In Wilmington, the vessel discharged Canadian lumber which is destined for construction projects along the U.S. East Coast. Forest products have been a mainstay cargo for Wilmington since the Port's establishment in 1923. Saga Forest Carriers International. A.S. has been calling at the Port of Wilmington, Delaware since the mid-90’ carrying lumber products. Upon discharge, Diamond State Terminal hauled the lumber shipments to storage in their lumber terminal adjacent to the Port.

This state-of-the-art general cargo vessel has a dead weight capacity of 46,901 MT.  In addition to her 10 holds, the vessel can carry containers on or under deck. She has a service speed of 14.9 knots. On-board, the vessel has two Tsui gantry cranes which are capable of lifting 42.7 MT., and have a maximum out-reach of 9 Meters. These specialized general cargo cranes have the ability to spread weather gear above the discharge area in order to protect the cargo and the workforce during discharge in all weather conditions. The vessel is also equipped with a bow thruster which assists the large vessel during maneuvering.
