Bocchi Americas Inaugurates Shipments of
Argentine Grapes, Plums and Garlic through Wilmington

 

Argentine fruit returned to the Port of Wilmington, Delaware this January with the arrival of M/V Amer Everest. The vessel delivered the season’s first shipments of Argentinean Thompson seedless and Red Flame seedless grapes along with Black Amber plums and garlic. The largest importer was Bocchi Americas Associates, who is the number one receiver and exporter of Argentine produce to North America. “Bocchi Americas is very satisfied with Wilmington’s service and

The Port of Wilmington is the nation’s leading gateway for imports of fruit, produce, and juice concentrate handling more than 1.4 million tons of fresh cargo in 2001. The M/V Amer Everest also carried shipments of Argentine fruit for Rio Vista, Euro Pacific Fruit Export and Jac Vandenberg, as well as apple and pear juice concentrate which are part of a year-round juice concentrate program.

Chiquita Fresh Inaugurates 
New Melon Program

This winter Chiquita Fresh North America is inaugurating a new program of imports of melons from Honduras. The melons will be shipped on Chiquita’s banana vessels which call in Wilmington every Monday. The volume could total a million boxes of melons.

The melon varieties will include cantaloupe, honeydew, and watermelon. From Wilmington, the shipments will be trucked to a near by cold storage facility, and will be marketed throughout the entire US East Coast under the Chiquita brand.

 

DSPC Welcomes 
New Director of Planning and Development

This January Mr. Paul F. Ignudo, Sr. was appointed as the Diamond State Port Corporation’s (DSPC) new Director of Planning and Development. Paul brings to the DSPC a wealth of knowledge and experience in all phases of construction and local, state and federal government regulations and administration. For the past nine years, Paul was the Director of Facilities Management for the State of Delaware, where he oversaw construction management for

all of the state agencies. His experience also includes working for the City of Wilmington as the Commissioner of Licenses and Inspection, Pierce Associates, and Phoenix Steel Corporation.

As Director of Planning and Development, Paul will be responsible for the DSPC’s long-term planning, capital program development and execution, and the coordination of environmental, transportation, and other programs with Federal and State agencies. In his new position he will supervise construction of the Port’s $28 million dedicated auto carrier berth on the Delaware River which is scheduled for completion this summer. Paul will also continue the development plans to maximize the Port’s storage capacity in its dockside cold storage warehouses.
