Moroccan Clementines Return to
The Port of Wilmington, Delaware

Fresh Fruit Maroc and Dominion Citrus Limited are returning to Wilmington this fall, for the third consecutive season, with shipments of Moroccan clementines.  Beginning October 29th to mid-December, five to six reefer vessels are scheduled to call in Wilmington carrying Moroccan clementines.  The clementines will be stored at Wilmington’s dockside cold storage facility while awaiting transportation and distribution to Canada.

Wilmington will handle shipments of clementines grown by the four member groups of the Fresh Fruit Maroc co-operative.  The Groups are Agri-Souss (Agadir), G.P.A. (Agadir), B.G.F. (Berkane) and Delassus (Casablanca).  The variety imported is the Fina variety grown throughout Morocco with production concentrated in the southern region of Agadir and the northern region of Berkane.

The Moroccan clementines are notorious for their rich and aromatic flavor, skin that is easy to peel, juicy seedless wedges, and brilliant orange color.

For the first time ever, Fresh Fruit Maroc and Dominion Citrus exhibited at this year’s Produce Marketing Association convention in Philadelphia in order to meet with U.S. produce buyers and introduce them to the “Maroc” clementine as a first step in their strategic initiative to enter the U.S. market.

During fall 2000, Dominion Citrus brought 4 vessels of Moroccan clementines through Wilmington.  This year, they are planning to increase the number of vessels and volumes of fruit shipped through the Port.

Founded in 1923, the Port of Wilmington is an important asset for the local and regional economy, generating more than 5,800 jobs and contributing over $22 million in annual tax revenues to State and local government.  The Port is owned and operated by the Diamond State Port Corporation, a corporation of the State of Delaware.  For further information, digital photos, free tours of the Port and free speakers contact:
