Cargo too Big to Handle at the Port of Wilmington
Wilmington, Del. - The Port of
Wilmington, Delaware handled a special project shipment of a large,
cold, high-pressure separator on Sunday, January 15, 2006. The
separator will be used at the local Valero Energy Corporation refinery
in Delaware City to replace a vessel at the refinery's hydrocracker. The
223-ton unit was unloaded from the m/v Da Zhong by the local stevedoring
company Murphy Marine Services, using the ship's cranes, onto a barge
for transport. It was moved by barge from the Port of Wilmington to
Delaware City via the C & D Canal. The cylinder shaped separator was
fabricated in Italy and measures approximately 43 ft. in length and 13
ft. in diameter, and was shipped from the Port of Marina Di Carrara,
Italy. |
The Port of Wilmington has demonstrated
a high level of expertise in handling special project cargoes that are
high in value, oversized, heavy, and often require specialized
logistics. Wilmington's deepwater berths, experienced staff, and
superior links to major U.S. East Coast rail and highway infrastructure
make it ideal for shipments of separators, transformers, generators, and
other heavy lift and specialized project cargo.
Founded in 1923, the Port of Wilmington
is an important asset for the local and regional economy, generating
more than 5,300 jobs and contributing over $23 million in annual tax
revenues to state and local government. The Port is owned and operated
by the Diamond State Port Corporation, a corporation of the State of
Delaware
