A 400 MVA transformer Arrives via Wilmington

Wilmington, DEA 400 MVA transformer that will be used to upgrade and improve power reliability across Sussex County and the Delmarva Peninsula arrived on March 30 through the Port of Wilmington aboard the m/v Scan Hansa, a specially built heavy lift ship. The unusually large 337,000 pound cargo, measuring 31' 2" long, 13' 2" wide, and 15' 9" high, was loaded to a special 12 axel, 96 wheel trailer for drayage off the port for loading onto a unique railcar, one of four in the U.S. designed for such large loads, for the final leg of its journey to the Conectiv Indian River substation. Manufactured by ABB of Brazil, the transformer will move power into and around the peninsula more efficiently by increasing and decreasing voltage as needed.

Founded in 1923, the Port of Wilmington is an important asset for the local and regional economy, generating more than 5,800 jobs and contributing over $18 million in annual tax revenues to State and local government.  The Port is owned and operated by the Diamond State Port Corporation, a corporation of the State of Delaware.
