M/V Saga Explorer Calls Wilmington on Her Maiden Voyage

Wilmington, Del. Diamond State Port (DSPC), Saga Forest Carriers (Saga), and maritime community representatives will celebrate the maiden voyage arrival of M/V Saga Explorer on Wednesday, March 28 at the Port of Wilmington, Delaware. M/V Saga Explorer is a box-shaped, open-hatch bulk carrier custom-built for shipping of forest product. She was delivered on December 15th 2006, and is Saga’s fourth newbuilding in a series of nine vessels to be delivered from Oshima Shipbuilding CO. Ltd., Japan by 2008.

Saga has been calling at the Port of Wilmington since 1993 discharging Canadian lumber which is destined for mid-Atlantic region construction projects. Saga’s transport of western Canadian green and kiln dried Hem-Fir lumber have been steadily moving through Wilmington for Sherwood, a major US marketing company that selected Wilmington as its distribution hub.

“I welcome M/V Saga Explorer on her maiden voyage and congratulate Saga Forest Carriers for its significant commitment to the logistics requirements of the forest products trade“, said DSPC Executive Director, Gene Bailey. “Forest products have been a mainstay cargo of our Port since its establishment in 1923, and our long and successful partnership with Saga contributes to our mutual growth in this cargo niche”, he added. In 2006, the Port handled 210, 000 tons of forest products, comprised of Canadian and Scandinavian lumber, Swedish newsprint and domestically produced kraft liner board.

Along with her sisters in the Saga Adventure class, M/V Saga Explorer has a deadweight capacity of 47,000 MT. In addition to her 10 holds, the vessel can carry containers on or under deck. She has a service speed of 14.9 knots. On-board, the vessel has two gantry cranes which are capable of lifting 42 LT. These specialized general cargo cranes have the ability to spread weather gear above the discharge area in order to protect the cargo and the workforce during discharge in all weather conditions. The vessel is also equipped with a bow thruster which assists the large vessel during maneuvering.
