Robert F. Senseny Receives the Babiarz Award 2003

Wilmington, DE - the Port of Wilmington Maritime Society will present the John J. Babiarz Maritime Award 2003 to the Port of Wilmington’s Harbor Master, Robert F. Senseny. The award was created in 1999 to recognize those individuals who have demonstrated an outstanding dedication to development and progress at the Port of Wilmington.

Senseny joined the Port 60 years ago, and has played a key role in the operations and growth of the Port of Wilmington since 1944. In his role as Harbor Master, he has safely docked and undocked 1000s of ships on calm sunny days as well as on stormy, icy and rainy evenings. In this capacity, he was frequently the first person arriving ship captains met and the last one they saw before leaving the Port. Prior to the establishment of the Diamond State Port Corporation, Senseny was responsible for the daily hire of the Port’s labor force and for supervising day-to-day warehouse operations.

He was involved at various levels in the Port’s major expansion projects including: building of the floating berth on the Christina River and reclaiming marsh for Port expansion for the Port’s major container operators and automobile tenants. His expertise and advice were sought after to develop operating specifications for the Port’s newest container crane, razing old warehouses, and in building new ones. Senseny was an integral member of the Port’s team that developed the operations specifications for the newly built $27.5M Auto & RoRo berth on the Delaware River.

In 1999, the Diamond State Port Corporation (DSPC) recognized Senseny’s hard work, dedication, unequalled knowledge of Port operations, and his unparallel commitment to the growth and continued success of the Port of Wilmington by naming the Port’s Administration building after him.

Previous awardees of the Babiarz award are: President of Wilmington Tug, Hick Rowland; Previous Secretary of State and Chairman of DSPC, Ed Freel, President of the Maritime Exchange for the Delaware River and Bay, Dennis Rochford; and President of Murphy Marine Services, Mark Murphy.

“On behalf of the DSPC I congratulate Bobby for receiving the John J. Babiarz Maritime Award 2003 of which he deserves so much. It is my privilege to have such a dedicated and inspiring leader among my staff”, said Eugene R. Bailey, DSPC Executive Director.

Founded in 1923, the Port of Wilmington is an important asset for the local and regional economy, generating more than 5,800 jobs and contributing over $18 million in annual tax revenues to State and local government.  The Port is owned and operated by the Diamond State Port Corporation, a corporation of the State of Delaware.
