Port of Wilmington, Delaware Unveils New Improved Web Site

The Port of Wilmington, Delaware recently completed the re-design and re-engineering of its second-generation Internet web site.  The new site is easier to navigate while providing more information and new features about the Port’s maritime trade and facilities.

The Port’s first web site was created nearly four years ago, and received an award from the American Association of Port Authorities.  During the past four years the Port has gone through significant development and growth of its facilities and trade, and now provides more value-added services to its customers.  In conjunction with these changes, usage of the world-wide-web as an information and communications tool in the maritime industry has expanded and has become a more dominant and valuable service.

Visitors to the Port’s new web site can learn about the Port’s current business and trade, the various cargoes the Port handles, including fresh fruit imports, juice concentrate imports, meat and fish imports, automobiles, bulk cargoes, containers and forest products.  Port users and customers can find a comprehensive vessel arrival schedule as well as information about the shipping lines that call Wilmington, including their shipping schedules, trade routes and contact information.

A dedicated section features Wilmington’s strategic location on the US East Coast and highlights the Port’s warehouse facilities through an interactive facility display map.  In addition, this section provides information about the construction progress of on-going port improvement projects, such as the dedicated Delaware River automobile berth project which is scheduled to be completed by summer 2002.

The site has a section on the Wilmington Port’s history since its establishment in 1923, as well as latest news about the Port and the Port community.  Various Port publications including issues of Port Illustrated and the Port’s history book are available on-line for purchase or subscription.  Residents in the Del-Mar-Va Peninsula can find out information about the Port’s community cultural events such as the upcoming Delaware Port Days Festival.

“We are very excited about the newly designed web site and we are confident that it will promote better communication between the Port of Wilmington, the maritime community and the general public”, said Adam McBride, Executive Director of the Diamond State Port Corporation.  “We invite you to visit our site at www.PortofWilmingtonDE.com, learn about the Port of Wilmington and give us your comments and suggestions”, he adds.

Founded in 1923, the Port of Wilmington is an important asset for the local and regional economy, generating more than 5,800 jobs and contributing over $22 million in annual tax revenues to State and local government.  The Port is owned and operated by the Diamond State Port Corporation, a corporation of the State of Delaware.  For further information, digital photos, free tours of the Port and free speakers contact:
