Wilmington, DE - Holmen Paper, a 400 year old Swedish company, has selected the Port of Wilmington to be its Mid-Atlantic distribution hub and has signed a 5-year agreement with the Port, to handle the logistics coordination, inventory management and truck and rail loading of its high quality newsprint, catalog and magazine stock. This year Holmen plans to ship 50,000 tons of printing paper to Wilmington and gradually to grow the shipments to 100,000 tons annually in succeeding years. |

, the first ship to arrive under this new contract will call in
Wilmington tonight, Tuesday, June 22, and will discharge 3278 rolls of
Holmen’s Swedish-made paper during the next two days. Holmen has
contracted with Star Shipping of Bergen, Norway to provide the ocean
transport from its mill in Norrköping on the east coast of Sweden to
Wilmington. It is anticipated that a monthly shipping schedule will
increase to 18-24 arrivals per year. Star Shipping operates more
than 40 specialized open-hatch vessels that are designed primarily for
the transport of forest and paper products. |
From Wilmington, Holmen’s high quality
paper stock will be distributed via truck and rail to printers along the
U.S. East Coast and throughout the Mid-West. Local customers include:
The Wilmington’s News Journal, Camden County’s Courier Post, and to
R. R. Donnelly in Lancaster for telephone directories and catalogs.
“The Port of Wilmington’s uncommon personalized customer service and the professionalism of its staff, its IT expertise and its state-of-the-art warehouse facilities drove our decision to choose Wilmington as our logistics partner in Mid-Atlantic region”, said Henry W. Olsson, president of Holmen Paper, USA. Wilmington’s sophisticated IT capabilities will improve Holmen’s cargo visibility throughout the supply chain, enhance its inventory control, and enable the Swedish paper producer to expedite cargo distribution to customers while keeping them well informed regarding their time sensitive deliveries. Ironically, Holmen and the Port will work in a virtual paperless environment! The Port liaised very closely with Norfolk Southern (NS) railroad to create a complete intermodal logistics program for paper distribution. The pending completion of the reconstruction of the Shellpot Bridge, spanning the Christina River and adjacent to the Port, will enable NS to substantially reduce it delivery time to end users, complement the Port’s focus on efficient distribution, and produce a substantial amount of new rail traffic over the Shellpot. “We are very excited about our new partnership with Holmen”, said Gene Bailey, executive director of the Diamond State Port Corporation (DSPC). “And we look forward to helping Holmen grow its market share by providing the very best in logistics support and customer service to this world-class paper producer”, he added.
