Tug Lindsey Submerged in the Christina River

Wilmington, DEOn October 26, 2004, at approximately 3:45 p.m., the tugboat “Lindsey” was sailing west on the Christina River. While approaching berth three at the Port of Wilmington, Lindsey started to take on water which caused the stern to begin sinking and at about 4:45p.m. Lindsey was completely submerged in the Christina River.

Tug Lindsey, owned by Wilmington Tug, Inc., which operates at the Port of Wilmington and along other Delaware River ports, had three crew members onboard. All three were safely rescued from the water by a second tug. All three men declined medical treatment.

Landside port operations resumed following the safe rescue of the crew members, however the U.S. Coast Guard has closed the Christina River until further notice while salvage operations are being planned.

Founded in 1923, the Port of Wilmington is an important asset for the local and regional economy, generating more than 5,800 jobs and contributing over $18 million in annual tax revenues to state and local government.  The Port is owned and operated by the Diamond State Port Corporation, a corporation of the State of Delaware.
