Ms. Whalen, a
Delaware labor leader and community activist, has worked for General
Motors for the past three decades and has been the United Auto Workers (UAW)
Corporate Communications Coordinator at the automaker’s Wilmington plant
since 1992. She is the Chairperson of Community Services for UAW Local
435, the current Vice President of the Delaware State UAW CAP (Community
Action Program) Council, and an Executive Board Member of the Coalition
of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU). She is a past President of the A.
Philip Randolph Institute-Delaware Chapter, a past member of the
Executive Board of the Wilmington NAACP and has served as Secretary of
Women In The NAACP (WIN). |

Ms. Whalen’s many accomplishments and awards include: The Nation Building 'Lean On Me' Award; certificates for dedication and awards of excellence from the United Way-AFL-CIO Community Services; A. Philip Randolph Institute Certificates of Recognition including and award for 20 years of service as its President; Recognition of Honor from the National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ) 1999; “Women In the UAW” Delaware CAP Achievement Award; the 2004 Maida Springer Kemp; the 2006 Recognition Award from International Longshoreman’s Association; the 2007 “Outstanding Community Services” Award from The King Center; and, the 2008 Leadership award from the Coalition of Black Trades Unionists (CBTU). |
